Autoclaves for rubber and tire vulcanization
Autoclaves for rubber and tire vulcanization are specialized devices used in the tire industry and in the manufacture of rubber products. Vulcanization is a chemical process in which rubber (natural or synthetic) is subjected to high temperature and pressure in the presence of sulfur or other vulcanizing agents. The purpose of vulcanization is to improve the mechanical properties of rubber—such as its elasticity, hardness, and wear resistance—as well as to increase its durability.
Vulcanization autoclaves are designed to maintain constant, high temperatures and pressures, which are essential for the proper conduct of this process. Depending on the type of product being manufactured, autoclaves may vary in size, design, and control system.

How does an autoclave for vulcanizing rubber and tires work?
01. Preparing the mold and rubber
Rubber in the form of a compound (containing, among other things, rubber, fillers, and vulcanizing agents) is placed in a mold shaped like the finished product (e.g., tires, gaskets). The mold is then closed to prevent the rubber mixture from leaking out during the vulcanization process.
02. Placing in the autoclave
The mold with the rubber is placed in the autoclave, which is then sealed airtight. At this point, the autoclave has already reached the required pressure and temperature.
03. The vulcanization process
In an autoclave, the rubber is subjected to high temperatures (typically in the range of 140–180°C, depending on the type of rubber) and high pressure (typically in the range of 2–10 bar). The heat activates the vulcanization process, and the pressure allows the rubber to be molded into the desired shape. The duration of the vulcanization process depends on the thickness of the product and the type of rubber, but it usually ranges from a dozen or so minutes to several hours.
04. Cooling
Once vulcanization is complete, the temperature and pressure in the autoclave are gradually reduced so that the rubber can cool and retain its new, vulcanized shape.
05. Removing the mold
The finished rubber products are removed from the mold, and the process is complete.
Advantages of using autoclaves for rubber and tire vulcanization:
Consistent quality
Thanks to precise control of temperature and pressure, the vulcanization process is repeatable, ensuring high-quality rubber products.
High Production Efficiency
Autoclaves enable the vulcanization process to be carried out quickly, which helps increase production efficiency, especially when manufacturing large quantities of tires or other rubber products.
Ability to vulcanize large components
Autoclave vulcanization allows for the production of larger rubber components, such as large tires and industrial gaskets, which require uniform distribution of heat and pressure.
Optimization of Production Costs
Although the initial cost of investing in autoclaves may be high, their long-term efficiency in producing large quantities of rubber products reduces unit production costs.
Material Versatility
Autoclaves can be used to vulcanize a wide range of rubber materials, including natural and synthetic rubber, as well as various rubber compounds used in the production of tires, gaskets, hoses, and shock-absorbing components.
Types of Autoclaves for Rubber and Tire Vulcanization
Most commonly used in the tire vulcanization industry, they feature a cylindrical chamber in which molds containing rubber are placed. Thanks to uniform pressure and temperature, they ensure consistent vulcanization.
Horizontal and vertical autoclaves differ in the orientation of their chambers. In horizontal autoclaves, the vulcanization process is often used to manufacture smaller parts, while in vertical autoclaves, it is used to manufacture larger components, such as tires.
These autoclaves have several zones with different temperatures, which allows for more precise control of the vulcanization process and adaptation to the various material requirements and shapes of the manufactured products.
The Use of Autoclaves in Rubber and Tire Vulcanization
- Tire industry: Manufacture of tires for cars, industrial vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and other vehicles.
- Automotive industry: Vulcanization of gaskets, shock absorbers, rubber suspension components, rubber hoses, and other components.
- Aviation industry: Manufacture of aircraft tires and rubber products used in aircraft construction.
- Railway industry: Manufacture of rubber components for rolling stock, such as seals, shock-absorbing pads, and components for running gear.
- Food and medical industries: Production of rubber components used in the food industry (e.g., seals in equipment) and the medical industry (e.g., rubber components in medical devices).
Summary
Autoclaves for rubber and tire vulcanization are essential pieces of equipment in the production of rubber products, which require precise heating and high pressure to carry out the vulcanization process. Thanks to advanced temperature and pressure control technology, autoclaves ensure consistent product quality, which is crucial in industries such as the tire, automotive, rail, and aerospace sectors. Their versatility and ability to handle large components make them an essential tool in the production of tires and other rubber products.
